Everytime I bring this up to Americans, they all act shocked. So I gotta ask you, is there a HUGE rivalry between Italian-Americans and Portuguese-Americans....like there is between the Canadian ones? The rivalry in Canada is so huge that we take near-orgasmic pleasure in seeing each others team go out!!!

I know all about it...I have cousins in Ontario and they have both Italian and Portuguese friends and the rivalry is incredible! I think its because there is so many of both people and they do a lot of the same work (brick layers, construction) that they get in each others way.
The guys here would know better than I do, but, I don't see it as big here (from a neutral point of view..though my cousin in Jersey is married to a Portuguese guy) as it is in Canada in terms of the rivalry.
There's some. But with me it's personal - as a teen I worked through Highschool and college in the same Italian Restaurant. Wagering was common place. And as you know, they have gotten much more favorable results than we have - resulting in a lot of slavering for free to pay my debts.
Yep - still a lot of sour in those old grapes.
Our West in San Fran, it's a big deal. Why? Because we're both true Latins just like it is with us and the Spaniards.
My last name has alot of vowels and I look Italian in appearance.
I always get asked if I'm Italian and respond in kind by saying, "Italians aren't this beautiful, I'm 100% pork and cheese." :D

I wouldn't say it's all that big. We tend to live in different areas.

I think Toronto must be ground-zero for the wop vs porker rivalry. I think this city would burn if Portugal and Italy ever got to the final of a major tournament.

I don't see a problem with it. You guys can't help it if you're not Italian.

Honestly Tinto, I don't think there is a rivalry. I think there is amongst the insecure 15 year olds, kinda like: 'our dicks are bigger than yours'. But amongst normal people (15 year olds aren't exactly normal in my opinion), there isn't much hostility.
I think both have a respect for each other since they are similar in a few ways: appearance, culture, and temperment. They have similar outlooks on life, so yeah, that would bring some hostility.
To be honest, I like the Italians. They can be passionate, expressive yet empathetic all the same time. Much like the Portuguese I'd say. Why do you think there are so many Italian-Portuguese weddings in the Toronto area. It's everywhere. I don't know of any two groups that intermarry more than Italian-Portuguese do.
There's no room for luke warm anything, it's either hot and cold with the latins.
This is all a generalization obviously, but generalizations usually come from something.
I'd have to agree with Fee-Go.
This so called rivalry is more due to Luso-Canadian insecurity.
Most Italian-Canadians couldn't care less with what happens with the ChupaLiga, our national team or club sides in Europe.

There is no rivalry?
Yes. Yes there is.
It doesn't mean that Italians and Portuguese cannot be friends. I think that the Italian-Portuguese marriage is the most common of all inter-euro unions in Canada.
Would you say the scene in Montreal is like Michael Jackson's beat it video http://www.neverland-valley.com/neverland-valley/video-clips/videos/05_thriller/beat-it/pix/beat-it_014.jpg or is it more traditional and less musical like that of the outsiders?http://www.chucksconnection.com/outsiders/outsiders5.jpg

Where'd you grow up? You kidding me man? In Toronto there is MAJOR rivalry between our two communities, and it's precisely because we have so much in common. In schools, on construction sites, it's rampant.
It's got nothing to do with hating our wop competitors, my best friends all through high school were all Italians - hell I went to Chaminade! But you gotta be blind not to see the rivalry here. Do you recall what it was like when Brazil won the world cup against Italy? The Italians could barely stand the loss, but the sight of the Portuguese celebrating the victory of our "Brazilian brothers", drove em right round the bend.
All good fun.

Pila I'm disappointed in you...you forgot to include the famous fight scene from West Side Story which could accuratly describe the scene in Montreal.
I think we should all get "Greaser" names so when we meet the WOPS in the parking lot for the rumble, we're cooler than they are.
Pila - "Hump"
Red - "Weevil"
Marco - "Hambone"
Tinto - "Flip"
Couto - "Diesel"
E66 - "Curtis"
IC - "Iron"
Timmy - "Brow"
Flo - "Town"
Pen - "Guinny"
Razor - "Harley"
Fee-Go - "Roller"
Jure - "Skinny"
Now we're ready for some rumble.
Tinto

What would the Portuguese equivalent of these be?
JureM

Don't forget the fake scars down the side of our faces and of course, like all good rumbles, we all need to get the canvas Converse Chuck Taylors preferably in black. We'd have the fight won even before it starts.
Maybe rather than "Greaser" names, we need Portuguese "Greaser" names.
Pila - "Pila"
Red - "Pe Torto"
Marco - "Bancario"
Tinto - "Fresco"
Couto - "Furioso"
E66 - "Joao Trez Voltas"
IC - "Ferro"
Timmy - "Bolas"
Flo - "Cabeca"
Pen - "Castelao"
Razor - "Pistola"
Fee-Go - "Maluco"
Jure - "Espinha"

E66 - "Joao Trez Voltas"
:howler:
I thought I'd see at least one "jose ninguem" in there.
In the initial "greaser" names, how'd I miss the opportunity to name Razor "Burn"? :rotfl:

Pila brother..you're killing me... :rotfl2:
and i have to agree with Tinto on this one...you just can't get away from the rivalry..and it's not reserved to the young 15 year old pork chops and wops...i grew up with it in school (De La Salle)..i played soccer with them and against them....i've married into it and one of my best friends is a wop...no matter what, we are always at each other..the only difference is it's all in fun between friends and families....but there is always some truth behind those jokes...(so joey which flag will you be waving today?)..but in the end there is no rivalry in T.O like the one between pork chops and wops...
Maybe rather than "Greaser" names, we need Portuguese "Greaser" names.

when did you graduate?
yup.. i was at del from grade 9 to 11...i'm 31 so that was around 86 to 89...
I was there from 9 to 13
Graduated in 88 I think! Had the pleasure of being taught by Oflaherty, Burns, Father Lutchka-RIP (Spelling?), Relacion, Hardy and so on.
Can't forget Norm Davies, who is the Dean now. Can't believe that he's still around.
The five years I spent their were awesome. Aw the memories!

of being taught by Oflaherty
Holy shit, that guy must've been there a long time. My older brother is 45, was a Del boy, and I remember him talking about Oflaherty.
He's was around for a long time.
