Just realized this which got me pretty excited. WE GET NEW JERSIES!!!!
What design would you all like to see. Still thinking about my idea. Definately need the checkers to stick out. Some think it looks ugly, but we are known for the blatantly standoutish checkers. What you guys think? Or maybe we could do horrible drawings, scan em, and post em, then vote?Just a thought.

What sucks is that nike will probably make em all look the same again.

Great topic, there's no question that checkers must be incorporated, it's our trademark ......... My pipe-dream is to see a black jersey ( Kind of like one of Cleveland's Croatian teams a few years ago ). Wouldn't that shirt look great with Boban written on the back!

I know most of you guys like the checks, but to be honest I was never a big fan of them. Now believe me, I wear mine with pride every time we play and sometimes for days before a big game, but I always thought National team jersies should be solid with no stripes or sashes, etc. (the only exception should be Argentina). I mean look way back when when Cro selections played before and during WW2, they always wore solid red shirts with white shorts and blue socks. I know we played one game after we became independant in red shirts against the Ukraine and the combination looked great (Even Majstor said this). Anyway, I know we will continue to wear checked jersey's because that has been our symbol now for more than 10 years, and I will purchase the new shirt as soon as it goes on sale, i just wanted to state my opinion that's all.

This is where I disagree with you Robin... I feel the Checkered jersey is unique and looks great...its what makes our NT stand out...put it this way;

When you seen light blue vertical stripes who do you think of? Argentina of course....

When you see White shirts, black shorts, white socks you know you are playing the Germans.

When you see all blue? Italia.

When you see solid red shirts, white shorts, blue socks? Who do you think of? One of many countries...Czech Republic....the US NT wore the same uniform style during the women's WC...etc.

If we lose the full checkers on the jersey's we lose what makes us unique as a nation and a NT. Then we become like everone else. Everytime I wear my Lotto white, or my Nike checkered jersey (the first one) or the first Blue Nike shirt with the checkers on the sleeves the statement becomes "Oh Croatia...great NT. Boban!! Suker!!" It makes you feel good that the country is recognized.

Unfortunatly with the current vlada in Hrvatska we may revert to other colors...;)

Steve, I know it makes us unique bro, I guess I'm just a traditionalist when it comes to team colors. It's just like I said, I am proud to wear my shirt wherever I go, I just wish we could have been RED, white and blue from the start. Peace out man!

Stipe,Croatian first kit,(that one you've posted)i\was made by this artist dude(forgot his name)for that occasion. Before that we NEVER have had checkerd jersey,NEVER.(Grba is absolutely right). We had,RED,WHITE AND BLUE with our Scudetto on the chest, wich is checkerd coat of arms.

Grba,we have had this conversations million times and I do agree with you,but would still like to have certain dosage of checkers on the shirt, similar to white Lotto and first Nike blue and/or maybe even current Nike away(the one we've beaten; slovenes with).

God help us with Nike's next design...

Those blue Jerseys are pure good luck for us! we beat Bulgaria in the last game of qualifications and then Slovenia with them and in France 98 we never lost a game while wearing the blue! i am always confident when we wear the blue, which looks great I think. But definetly Nike can do much better with the next jerseys, but something tells me they will be generic Nike crap.:(

hhmm...what kind of pride are you talking about Robin?:D

HNS has a say in what kind of shirts they want. Nike has generic shirts like CM10 said but ours are always different because of the checkers and I like that bacause everybody knows exactly who is playing. I remember when Croatia came here to Australia, they had all red shirts and they looked great but I think they used them only for the tour to Aus.

I would keep the checkers because we have a tradition with them now. Lotto was the best. They made shirts especially for us, not for 123562345123 other teams aswell. The current shirt has grown on me and I like it even though I don't really like Nike very much. Oh well, I guess money is the most important thing these days.

Yeah, but hopw difficult was it to make chequered jerseys in the 1940s? Nobody cared for uniforms back then, no replicas were made and the important thing was to recognise your teammate...

haha what do you mean Robin;) actually i always like the home N/T jerseys better but the blue ones like Bad Blue Boy said from 98 were the sickest!!! and they bring us a lot of good luck for some reason, nothing to do with Dinamo. I agree with Dinamovac:D no matter how generic Nike is our jerseys always are unique, they have to be no matter what with those checkers. Also good point by Ero they had no technology in the 40's and recognizing your team mate was the biggest priority.

LOTTO WAS THE BEST!!!! it was specifically made for us and Parma lol that was thier only 2 teams of some value back then. BRING BACK LOTTO! nothing better than Italian soccer design....anything but Kappa lol.

They should make the checkers on the home cover the front in the shape of the GRB! and the back. While on the aways they should still keep em Blue with the checkers just on the collar and going in a triangle from the neck to the arms. Whatever they do as long as they dont screw around with it too much, ITS OUR NATIONAL SYMBOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gotta disagree. Remember the piece of govno game against Ecuador in WC2002? Now, in 1998 i will agree. Wore them straight through the elimination round, except the france game and we all know what happened.

My ideal jersey would stick to the ideal red, white ,blue style that were ben using since 1912 and what generations of diaspora croatian teams have stuck to, yes we are known for the all out red/white checkered jersey and its our trademark and makes us stik out, but i think its a little overboard, i would love to see a red home jersey (red front and back) with chekers imporporated into the sleve and underarm with white on the sides, that would be my ideal jersey, with a duplicate white reserve jersey. I drew a cheap ass sketch on paint since i dont got no high teach graphics programs to show u what i mean, its basic, not overboard but i think it does the trick. If only the Nike pederi could come up with something like this :D

Uskok, I think we signed a 5 year deal with Nike worth 4-6 million dollars in 2000, whickh means we have 2 1/2 years left with them(not 100% sure). As much as I love the checkers and the jerseys we've had I've gotta agree with ditching them for a solid color, or at least tone them down like the Lotto jerseys. Although, I do like that red jersey that someone designed, thats pretty sweet. I kind of liked the style of jersey that Slovenia had but I think those are kappa.

Kappa shirts are for queers. That look is straight out of Back Street Boys. Plus, they look like something more suited for deep sea diving or luge. :D

As for Nike, they screwed up all the NT uniforms not just ours. They really do look cheap...I hope they do a much better job than they did on these pst sets...but, then again, Adidas didn't do such a hot job with their kits this past WC as well. Both Nike and Adidas made their kits way to generic looking.

robin
11-23-2003, 11:26 AM
Yeah Stipe that' true, but Nike's were far more uglier than Adidas's. Nike and everybody else should just stick to basics like Umbro. Umbro's slogan is " JUST SOCCER" and believe me they live up to this.

JureM
11-23-2003, 11:50 AM
Umbro usually does a great job with their kits as does Adidas..but Adidas surprised me with the fact that all their NT kits were the exact same design this past WC...just was Nike's were. The Germans were fine because they were in their traditional style kits which is solid white shirts, black shorts, white socks...though they went away from their traditional green away kits to black ones....

(Trivial Question.....why did Germany wear Green for their away kits???)

Anyway, lets hope that originality goes back to uniform design this year...

By the way, hands down for me, the best uniforms were Germany's kits in Euro96..it was a classic addidas design.

You would be wrong...the answer is that after WWII nobody would play Germany in any athletic event. The first country to do so was Ireland and out of respect for that, they adopted green for their away kits.

robin

Again, it could be an "urban legend" on the respect to the Irish team part but, I asked this question to a German friend of mine that I played College soccer with and also another German guy from the Cosmopolitan Soccer League and I got the same answer from both of them and it was the Irish answer..but again, who knows.

Don't like the checkers too much. It's turned into some marketing tool for profits sake. It belongs over the player's heart and that's it.

Solid red, with white shorts and blue socks. Or all white.

But if they do go with the checkers again I have to go with the lotto full sleeve from Euro 96. And the accompanying whites were class.

Cheers

Ero
11-24-2003, 01:22 AM
I like the checkers all over the shirt, I think a solid red shirt will become too much like the hundreds of other teams that wear the same...we have a unique flag and grb, nobody has anything similar. The checkerboard Grb is the centrepiece of every Croatian flag, and righfully it is the centerpiece of our National Team jerseys...

baraba
11-24-2003, 08:12 AM
I agree with Ero. Although tradition may dictate that we should wear solid red, like someone said, back then the jersey wasn't for fashion or identification. Countries just chose shirts that represented the national colours and not much effort was put into it. The checkers are awesome. We are instantly identifiable and they are just as much part of out heritage as the red, white and blue. The lotto jerseys were works of art if you ask me. Yes, they are a little loud and stand out but so are Croatians. :)

I do think Nike could do a much better job though. Hopefully, these new jerseys will be an improvement on the current ones. I mean, I still own the jersey but am not as impressed by it as I should be.

JureM
11-24-2003, 08:55 AM
Thats exactly what I've been saying all along..the checkers on the jersey are exactly what makes our NT unique and instantly identifiable. Again, we go to a solid red, we end up looking like the Czech Republic and like everyone else...

Though, Omolje's version of the new jersey is nicely done as it will make both sides of the debate happy in that he has incorportated the checkers with a solid color.

Omolje
11-24-2003, 01:16 PM
u got it jure but the sad thing is i know nike wont please both crowds and again wel be given a totaly checkered jersey, which again thers nothing wrong with, be loud and proud as someone said and its beautiful on the pitch, but for casual wear its sometimes a little to much if u know what i mean, so after seing my ideal design (red, with grb's towned down) does anyone else have any ideas?? its not tough jst take my image and do shit with it on paint.

JureM

I too realise that our home checked jersey makes us easily identifiable and is unique, but I also know that wearing the jersey outside of going to a game or going to watch HR. on TV is virtualy impossible. I mean it's just like Omolje said, it' not exactly wearable for just plain casual wear like most soccer kits are. I wear my Hajduk and Barca jersey's wherever I go, but I don't really wear our home NT shirt for fear of being laughed at by hot chicks and anybody else who isn't blind. Our away shirts for the most part haven't been so loud except maybe the 98 WC away, and therefore have been wearable outside of soccer related activities. Just my opinion boys, believe me when we get our new kits I'll be the first one to order both the home and away, no matter how loud they are.

lol Yeah, the long sleeve checks do look kinda like a jockey's uniform, but I still think they should be somewhere on the shirt at least...The Euro 96 white ones would still be my first choice...And yeah, I also wouldn't mind the next one having a collar, but I doubt Nike will do it.

Italians should know better;) just think of it this way the better we play the less questions people ask about our Unique looking jerseys, because they now know who we are and if we do even better in this Euro or possibly and more likely W/C 2006 then there shall be no questions about our identity. Thats another reason why we have to be thankful to the Vatreni they already informed like 75% of the World with that display in 98:clap:

The first jersey we had in euro 96 is the best, no doubt. I would love to see the blue jersey we had in france 98, but instead of blue it should be black.

HAHA MEXICANS!

No black on our jerseys or any other colour that isn't red white or blue, thats just the way I personally feel. What is this NHL or NFL jerseys? thats why I didn't like Nike's original jerseys for us with those really dark Blue patches under the arms that looked almost black, do we have black in the flag? on the grb? no so I dont think it would be right to have it on our jerseys since we already started going with the Red White and Blue.

Does anyone know a good website in the United States that I could purchase a Croatian National Team football jersey for a reasonable price? Thanks.
