He wants to eliminate penalty shootouts at the World Cup. (idiot, nothing has more drama than a shootout.) He suggests replacing them with;

* replay the match (logistical nightmare)
* golden goal (I've always thought the concept of sudden death to be gay)
* play extra-time with less players (wow, is Gary Bettman in charge of FIFA now?)

More gimmicks please. Why not forbid players from striking the ball left-footed? Oh, oh, oh, how about goals from outside the area between the 30th and 41st minute of the first half count as 2?

Idiot.

get rid of the offside rule and thus the enormous snoozefests that many matches become.

that's a good idea - eliminate the offside rule during extra time.

I'd support that.

No.

Keep the game as it is.

I watched a game where they had no offsides. The game, oddly enough, was a complete mess. No only was it almost impossible to score (the teams were most of the time evenly split into two groups, concentrating their efforts in both penalty areas of the field.) but it was surprisingly boring. All those long balls from one end to the other hoping someone would head the ball in.... yet no one could.

When the offsides rule is removed, that'll be the day I'll stop watching for good.

Eliminating offsides is almost as bad having shootouts.
For one thing offside rules should be applied properly by linesmen (not at all Blatter's fault in this case) to give the benefit of the doubt to the attacking teams. The ideas in Marco's post are not good/plausible but I am against shootouts nevertheless as it is a lottery 99.99% of the time and certainly doesn't reflect how the game was played and who 'deserved' to win during the game itself

Blatter is a smart man. I agree with everything he's saying. Problem is, less men will benefit the speedier teams. Hence, Portugal would get f*cked.

Penalty shoot outs are a stupid mess. Also, bring in video on contraversial calls.

Agreed, but I'd like the off side rule to go back to the way it was, with the whistle being blown at the time of the pass. It's so fucking annoying to have the ball reach the guy, and he start his run, before the play is stopped.

If you want to provoke, you'll have to learn to be a bit more subtle.

After full time, two men enter the center circle- one man leaves. :boxing:

Agreed. Removing the offsides rule leads to two mobs in front of each goal or 20 players chasing the ball ala pee-wee league with that one annoying kid cherry picking by the goal.

Penalty kicks may not be the best idea, but at least some skill is involved. The rest are just gimmicks. Golden goal doesn't work because both teams are so worried about giving up the goal that they become even more conservative.

If I was FIFA boss, I would give each team the right to ask for refs to review video 1/game or 2/round something like that.

As for no shoot-outs, that's tough, lengthening the extra periods, the players will be exhausted and the game will get worse and worse, perhaps add another 3 substitutions and implement golden goal...but even still after another 90 minutes max, the game would have to stop somehow, so pk is only solution.

They play in hockey until someone scores in the play offs. It works.

Watch overtime in the playoffs. Players get on and off the ice every 30-35 seconds. There's constant line juggling.

It would never work in football.

Keep the rules as is. No need for gimmicks. This is the WORLD game, not the NORTH AMERICAN game.

Yes, and if I had to watch a five overtime thriller between Italy and France where dudes just kick hte ball around afraid of allowing a goal I'd shoot myself. Who wants to watch a 4 hour soccer match?

When did Sepp Blatter become North American?

I'd like to start off by saying that I like shootout, especially since we it has played a role in two of my favorite sporting events (Portugal - England I & II).

I think they can get away with eliminating the shootout in a World/Euro final. They all go on vacation afterwards, so there is enough time for recovery. I'd say keep it as the game is, but if they change it up do it after the second xtratime period. Maybe add golden goal and allow an additional sub (or not). Substitution use is one of the great chess games during a match, so I wouldn't want to cheapen it.

I would be very against replays. Only the retarded British seem to have this melancholy attitude for replays. If I commited 3 hours to a sporting event, and was told at the end that they are doing it all over 2 or 3 days later- I would be pissed. I'll give the golf US Open a pass because the dynamic of the replay is changed (The entire field doesn't play the course, only the players tied for first). Plus, it's far more uncommon to see a golf major end with players tied for first than a soccer game end in a draw.

unlimited substitutions during extratime - that'll solve the exhaustion issue.

They have to make scoring easier. If I had a dollar for every 1-0 or 0-0 or 1-1 Serie A match I've seen, I could retire today. the same goes for the other leagues too. Either make the game so that it is more important to score than to defend a 1 goal lead or leave it the way it is and have the world cup decided on one guess by a keeper or one mis-shot by an exhausted player.

I read somewhere that keepers today are essentially a foot taller than most keepers 80 years ago and yet the goal has stayed the same size. Makes for more difficult scoring.

I think anyone who says that the current system of penalty kicks is not seriously flawed has got some thinking to do. :thumbd3:

And yet another GBI (Great Blatter Idea)

Blatter Says Sorry To Australia For Italy Defeat

It may be cold comfort for Australian fans but FIFA chief Sepp Blatter has apologised for the Socceroos’ controversial exit at the World Cup, saying that the team should have progressed to the last eight instead of Italy.

The Azzuri went on to win the competition but things could have been very different.

With the score at 0-0 in the last minute of the June 26 second round meeting between the two teams, Lucas Neill was controversially adjudged to have fouled Fabio Grosso in the penalty box.

Francesco Totti fired home the resultant spot kick to send his team into the last eight and the Australians out of the competition.

In an interview with Australian broadcasters SBS, Blatter said sorry and blamed the players' antics at the World Cup for causing problems.

"I think there was too much cheating on the players' side," he said.

"I would like to apologise (to) our fans in Australia."

Blatter believed that Guus Hiddink’s team deserved a place in the next round.

"They were great," he said.

"The Socceroos should have gone into the quarter-finals because they were up to beating Italy."

Does this guy ever shut up?

Fee-Go I think you're crazy. I just watched the Portugal-England pk's from this past summer and I still get super pumped. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is as tense, exciting and dramatic as a penalty shootout in football. It's unbelievable.

Oh and I've never been a fan of sudden death. It leaves the window open for the "fluke" winner.

I still have the Por-Eng match on my DVR. Nothing better than seeing Ashley Cole's wife crying after the winning goal. :grin2:
